The longhaired German sat alone in the library, staring at a
book of T. S. Eliot's poetry without actually reading The
Wasteland. There was something peculiar about the foreigner, something more than met the eye. Roberto saw this but was unable to unlock the enigma he represented: the German had a
secret, something he kept carefully concealed from the world.
Roberto should have taken care of the German—and Dr.
Harrison as well—when they first came to the rain forest. Once
Lazaro was out of the way, Roberto would permit no foreigners
to come into their land. Keeping out the foreigners, the
extranjeros, would keep the Zona pure.
The German closed the book and turned slowly until he was
staring straight at Roberto, the deep frown making his eyebrows
stand out like ridges on his prominent brow. Roberto knew it
was impossible for mortal eyes to see his astral body floating
invisibly in the room—though the German did indeed seem to
be studying him with severe disapproval.
The German pursed his lips as if to blow out a candle.
Roberto felt himself being pushed backward, his spirit being
driven from the room. Roberto knew the German couldn't be
responsible for this strange phenomenon; the extranjero
couldn't possibly have the power. Roberto did everything he
could to remain in the room, but whatever force was pushing
him backward was too strong for him to resist. Roberto was
blown through the hacienda roof, rising higher and higher into
the night sky, expelled from La Esmerelda.
He could think of no possible explanation for the way he'd
been driven from the hacienda—unless the German was himself,
a sorcerer. Perhaps he was an Old World witch, a necromancer
who commanded the power to summon and manipulate the
spirits that lived within the earth, and on it, and in the air
above. Roberto decided to reconsider his instinctive hatred for

the extranjero. The German might be, like Constant's Astrological Tables, one of those rare useful aspects of the corrupt European culture. If Roberto and the German pooled
their power, they might be able to crush Lazaro. The extranjero witch was a potential ally.
Roberto looked down at the rain forest until he found the
guardian, waiting for him in front of Anonimo's house. Anonimo
was one of Lazaro's employees, a lackey who had refused to join
the others at Roberto's ceremonies, although his beautiful young
wife had secretly become one of Roberto's acolytes. The
guardian called Roberto down to the house, indicating that he
should look in through the side window.
The sorcerer drifted over the veranda flooring and looked in
through the glass.
What he saw surprised him so much that it made it
impossible to maintain himself on the spirit plane, slamming
him back into his physical body.
"Oompf!"
Roberto flipped over, turning a backward somersault. He
scrambled to his feet, ignoring the fact that he'd bloodied his left elbow against the rock.
"The hypocrite!" Roberto screamed with outrage, turning to the guardian. "Lazaro has always made an elaborate pretense of taking blood only when the phases of the moon correspond with
the ritual. You saw him there tonight, lying on top of Maria
Therese, his teeth deep in her throat while he had his way with
her.
